Tourio translates the photos you take of menus, signs, labels and more. This page explains what we collect when you use the Tourio app and this website, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

  • The photos you scan, shrunk on your phone before they are sent, with a small thumbnail.
  • What Tourio makes from them: the text read from the photo, its translation, the information cards, and the questions you ask about the photo with their answers.
  • A fingerprint of a photo you pick from your library, so the app can tell when you pick the same one again.
  • A random ID the app creates when it is installed. It is not linked to your name, email or phone number.
  • Basic app details: platform (iOS or Android), app version, and the languages you choose.

We don't ask for your name, email or phone number, and we don't collect your location, contacts or advertising ID. Like any internet service, our servers and network provider see your IP address when you connect; we don't store it with your scans.

How we use it

  • To read, translate and explain your photos, and to answer your questions about them.
  • To keep your travel journal, so you can open earlier pages again.
  • To keep Tourio running: fixing errors, preventing abuse, and knowing which app versions are still in use.

We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.

Who processes your photos

To read and translate a photo, we send it, or the text read from it, to these services, which process it for us:

  • Google Cloud Vision, to read the text in the photo.
  • AI models from Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (GPT), to translate, explain and answer your questions.
  • Our hosting and network providers, including Cloudflare, which run our servers and deliver this website.

We may change which of these we use to keep Tourio fast and accurate. We share data with anyone else only when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

Your scans stay on our server, and in the journal on your phone, until you delete them. Deleting a page in the journal deletes its photo, translation and questions from our server as well. A scan that failed may be kept for a while so we can fix what went wrong.

Each photo on our server can only be reached through a long random link that the app uses to show it.

Your choices

  • Delete any page: long-press it in the journal, or open it and tap Delete.
  • Uninstalling the app deletes the journal on your phone, but not the copies on our server. Delete the pages in the app first if you want them gone: your scans are linked only to the app's random ID, so we can't find them by your name or email.
  • You can turn off camera and photo access in your phone's settings at any time.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. Write to us and we will help.
