Tourio translates and explains the photos you take of signs, labels, tickets and more. This page explains what we collect when you use the Tourio app and this website, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

  • The photos you scan, shrunk on your phone before they are sent, with a small thumbnail.
  • What Tourio makes from them: the text read from the photo, its translation, the information cards, and the questions you ask about the photo with their answers.
  • A fingerprint of a photo you pick from your library, so the app can tell when you pick the same one again.
  • A random ID the app creates when it is installed. On its own it is not linked to your name, email or phone number.
  • An ID that stays the same if you reinstall the app (on Android, the ID Android gives Tourio on your phone; on iPhone, one Tourio keeps in the keychain), used only to count your free scans. We store a one-way fingerprint of it, not the ID itself.
  • If you sign in (optional): your account's user ID, and the name and email address Apple or Google share with us. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email; Apple then gives us a private relay address instead.
  • If you buy a plan: which plan, when, the store's transaction ID and, for App Store purchases, the price and currency. Apple or Google take the payment; we never see your card or bank details.
  • Basic app details: platform (iOS or Android), app version, and the languages you choose.

Signing in is optional, and Tourio works fully without an account. We don't ask for your phone number, and we don't collect your location, contacts or advertising ID. Like any internet service, our servers and network provider see your IP address when you connect; we don't store it with your scans.

How we use it

  • To read, translate and explain your photos, and to answer your questions about them.
  • To keep your travel journal, so you can open earlier pages again.
  • To count the free scans you have left.
  • To give you the plan you bought, and to take it back if the purchase is refunded.
  • To keep Tourio running: fixing errors, preventing abuse, and knowing which app versions are still in use.

We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.

Who processes your data

These services process data for us, only to run Tourio:

  • Google Cloud Vision, which receives the photo to read the text in it.
  • AI models from Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (GPT), which receive the photo or the text read from it, to translate, explain and answer your questions.
  • Firebase Authentication (Google), which signs you in with Apple or Google and holds your account's name and email address.
  • Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play), which take payment for plans and confirm each purchase and refund to us.
  • Our hosting and network providers, including Cloudflare, which run our servers and deliver this website.

We may change which of these we use to keep Tourio fast and accurate. We share data with anyone else only when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

Your scans are stored on our server, so your journal is not lost and, when you sign in, follows you to your other devices. They stay there until you delete your account or ask us to delete them (see "Delete your account and data"). The journal on your phone keeps its own copy; deleting a page removes it from that journal. A scan that failed may be kept for a while so we can fix what went wrong.

Your account (name, email address and user ID) is kept until you delete it.

Purchase records (plan, date, transaction ID and price) are kept as sales records. When you delete your account they are no longer linked to it.

Each photo on our server can only be reached through a long random link that the app uses to show it.

Your choices

  • Remove a page from your journal: long-press it, or open it and tap Delete.
  • Sign in or out at any time in Settings > Account. Signing out clears the journal on that phone; your scans stay in your account.
  • Uninstalling the app deletes the journal on your phone, but not your scans on our server, and it does not reset your free scans. To delete your scans, see below.
  • You can turn off camera and photo access in your phone's settings at any time.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. Write to us and we will help.

Delete your account and data

In the app: open Settings > Account and tap Delete account. Your account and every scan in it, with its photo, translation and questions, are deleted from our server right away. On iPhone, Tourio also gives up its access to your Apple ID. Deleting your account does not refund a plan: refunds go through Apple or Google. A lifetime plan stays with your Apple ID or Google account, so you can sign in to a new Tourio account and tap Restore purchases to get it back.

Without the app: write to [email protected] from your account's email address, or tell us that address (if you hid your email with Sign in with Apple, it is the relay address shown in your Apple ID settings). We will delete the account and its scans within 30 days.

If you never signed in, your scans are linked only to the app's random ID, so we can't find them by your name or email. Sign in, then delete the account: the scans on this phone move into the account and are deleted with it.
